Fire was commissioned by Greenpeace for a promotional concert to be performed by Ron Spigelman and the London Parechi Players in April 1991. It was commissioned alongside three other pieces based on the elements by three other composers and performed continuously like a suite. This piece was later arranged for a fuller orchestra and performed by the St. Petersburg State Symphont Orchestra Klassika in February 2003 under the baton of their Chief Guest Conductor Roman Leontiev.
The music is almost unrelentingly fierce and literally “burns the ears” to quote one of the original reviews. There is a gentler episode to evoke the calm after the fire has swept through the landscape, but the fire is set to return…
