Inspired by Portuguese folk songs, this work explores a dialogue between tradition and contemporary invention. Its nine movements present a varied range of textures and expressive characters: some evoke the rhythmic vitality of folk dances or the playful spirit of children’s songs; others suggest a devotional tone or the inward lyricism of lament, while still others recall the dramatic intensity of traditional ballads. In certain movements, the original melodies appear in literal transcription, allowing their contours and modal inflections to emerge with clarity. In others, fragments and characteristic melodic gestures serve as points of departure for a more personal reworking, shaped through a distinctive harmonic language and carefully defined textures. The movement titles do not always correspond to the source songs, reflecting this interpretative freedom. While each movement maintains its own identity, the cycle as a whole balances fidelity and transformation, simplicity and invention. Performers are invited to shape these contrasts with attention to phrasing, colour, and clarity of texture, allowing the dialogue between past and present to unfold naturally. Impressões Bucólicas was commissioned by Aurum et Purpura – Núcleo de Criação Artístico and premiered by David Bento and Gabriela Peres at the Festival Além Mar, held in the Azores in February 2024, under the artistic direction of João Francisco Távora.
